What is folding@home? It's a project that's trying to understand how and why proteins form into useful shapes. It's basic research that has implications for a wide area of medicine, but the project is currently focused in the areas of alzheimers and parkinsons disease. There's a good writeup of the project on nature.com.

How can you help?

Download and install the screensaver or console program. The Tcom team number is 1328.

If you're setting up the console client for the first time, run it from a DOS box with this command:

code:
fah2console -config

This allows you to setup your userid and team number. You'll appear on the Tcom stats page once you've completed your first unit.

The console version is faster than the screensaver, but less pretty. It can also be run at the same time as seti, but runs at a lower priority - this means it'll only crunch units when seti is idle.

Work units vary greatly in size. Some take a few hours, others a couple of days. Have patience if it seems like you're taking a long time to complete a unit - you'll be rewarded with more points.

How can I join the Tcom team? It seems to be a cool thing, so why not help. I found the Tcom number 1328, but I don't show up in the list. Does someone have to authorise me???

I use the nice non DOS programme. I've given my Nick + team number, I just don't turn up in the Tcom list. That's why I'm confused

I wonder if the nicks would get displayed when you type a space in them. :\

Yeehaw, I'm in. I've done my first WU. It took my all night on a p3 733 @ 770 (140Mhz FSB)
and 640Mb 133SDRAM

with Morpheus and ICQ running in the background, is this acceptable??

That sounds about right hobbit. I've got a mobile P3 700 that does a WU every day or so for my other team. FAH seems to prefer AMD processors which is why I set my main machines up (AthlonXP 1600 and Thunderbird 1Ghz) for Tcom

I've been folding with them since I lost interest in the SETI project a while ago (well over 9 months). I figured I try and help the Tcom FAH team get on it's feet. It's a great project and I don't care which team I'm folding for as long as I'm still folding

Is there any way of running the console version without it appearing on the programs section of your taskbar? I have inadvertently closed it a couple times, simply because I am closing multiple windows, and didn't stop to see what it was.
Also, if I used the graphical version, but kept it minimized on the system tray the whole time, would it go slower than the console version?
