The GTF - About Gamers Talk

What are we?

Gamers Talk is a site dedicated to the open discussion of all facets of computer games and gaming.   The site is owned by and operated on behalf of long time gamers who gathered here from all over the world to share common interests. The site consists of a front page where users can find recent news and active topics and numerous sub forums for varied discussion needs.

  • Front page news is posted by individuals who have asked to contribute to Gamers Talk. If a user is interested in posting news, contact an administrator.
  • There are several types of forums. Gamers Talk Forums is a game-oriented board, but recognizes that individuals need places to post where they don't always need to talk about games. There are general forums, clan forums, and gaming forums separated by game type (ie: RPG, action, strategy, etc)

What are the rules?

While we have tried to keep minimal rules over the years to avoid restricting open discussion... it is a simple fact that many people refuse to self-regulate unless forced to. Thus, we have assembled a fairly long and still growing set of standards in the FAQ. Even so, the biggest rules are those of any online community: read before posting and learn what are appropriate behaviors from those around you. Respect the group and you shouldn't have any problems.

Where did we come from?

Gamers Talk was started several years back as "Tournament.com" which was owned by Oriion and setup as a refuge from the realms of corporate controlled gaming forums (Epic, GT Games, Atari)... which began with the intention of soliciting feedback from users of their gaming products, but which devolved into oppressive, expression limiting and stiffling "PR pods" which simply didn't care as much about their members as their shareholders.

How is the site paid for?

While some things (including the name) have changed over the years, Gamers Talk still runs largely with the help of user donations. Users will find a link to donate money if they feel generous and donations may be rewarded by additional community privileges. There are also affiliate links which users can click to provide a percentage of purchases to Gamers Talk. Users are encouraged to utilize the affiliate links when possible.

How is the site hosted?

This site was originally run on shared hosting, however over time a good amount of money and equipment donated by our members was used to build a high-end dedicated hosting platform which is now colocated in a Los Angeles, CA data center.   While we are thankful for the 'kind' offers for cheap hosting we receive from "community builders" who promise many great things, NO, we are not going to slash our 2GB database to 50MB and no, we are not going to stop swearing and saying bad things about evil publishers who root their customers machines.   Thank you so much for caring.
